An exhibition has been inaugurated at the Royal Palace of Madrid to commemorate 50 years of bilateral relations between China and Spain, which will remain open until May 26, 2024. It is an exhibition of figurative works by 99 contemporary Chinese and Spanish artists called "Beyond Realism. Figurative art of China and Spain".

These paintings offer a panorama of figurative art, not simply realism, practised in both countries over the last fifty years.

The first of the exhibition rooms shows paintings and drawings by Antonio López, Isabel Quintanilla, Francisco López, María Moreno, Julio López, Amalia Avia, Isabel Baquedano and Carmen Laffón.

It is a fine opportunity to learn about contemporary art practised by artists from both countries and discover their parallels and differences.

On March 15, 2024, the first museum devoted to Contemporary Spanish Realist art, the MUREC, was inaugurated. It is located in the city of Almería, occupying the Hospital de Santa María Magdalena, a 16th-century building restored for this project.

It has a permanent collection from the Ibáñez Cosentino Museum in Olula del Río, with realistic works from the beginning of the 20th century to the present. The collections have been completed by loan works from various artists and collectors, showing a complete panorama of contemporary Spanish realist art.

One of the museum's rooms is devoted to Antonio López and the realist masters of Madrid: Isabel Quintanilla, Francisco López, María Moreno, Julio López, Amalia Avia and Esperanza Parada.

This museum has been created thanks to the impulse of the painter Andrés García Ibáñez, who together with the Ibáñez Cosentino Foundation, has founded other museums in Almería capital and province focused on figurative and realistic art, especially from the Almería region. Specifically, the Foundation manages the Ibáñez Museum, the Pérez Siquier center and the Almeriense Art Collection. The latter is divided between the cultural center of Olula del Río (Almería), the Doña Pakyta Art Museum and the Almería Art Museum – Espacio 2, in Almería. To see more information about these museums visit their website here.
